American Robin
The familiar red-breasted rthrush (as a friend of mine liked to call it). Though in my opinion, the robin's breast is orange. It will forever be a mystery to me why everyone says it is red.
His back and head are usually grey. Unknown to many people, the male and fcmale can usually be distinquished by one feature; the male's head is usually darker, often even black, while the female's head is usually about the same color as her back. How obvious this difference is will depend on the individual birds. These birds are well-kn0wn for singing from the tops of the trees, and as being a sign that spring has arrived. |
Last year (2010) I tried and tried for a decent photo of a robin, but never got one. The only times I saw them were when I heard them singing from the tops of the trees and followed the sound. The pictures taken from the ground didn't turn out very well. This year (2011), however, we are blessed with at least one lovely robin couple living somewhere close by. I have seen them low in trees close to us, as well as hopping along the ground or flying up above. The orange color always makes them unmistakable.
